Challenge: The task for this project was to create a re-design mockup for the MSU College of Arts & Letters Faculty page. I used a prototyping software to create a mockup based solely off the faculty page.
Team: Myself
Software Used: Draftium
The Goal?
I wanted to create a decent mockup of the website that looks like the website, but just my own recreation of it. This was the first time I worked with draftium and even did a prototype mockup of any kind of website. I wanted to make sure that it goes with the affiliation of MSU.
Getting Started
As I was trying to choose what prototyping tool I would use, I chose to work with draftium because I already have knowledge and basic experience with a lot of the popular prototyping tools such as Sketch.
Implementation
So, I kept referring back to the original faculty page to make my mockup version of it and with draftium the site focuses on just grayscale, so there is no color. They say it is just to focus on the content and making it look organized and not put all the focus on design.
I put pictures because the original as you can see is very basic and has just their names and information below it with some links that work and some that do not. There's no organization.
I put quality pictures and then put their basic information below it with the option of clicking on 'know more' or the picture itself.
Then once you click on either, it brings you to the personal individual faculty member's information from classes taught to their interests. It makes it much easier to navigate through faculty members.
Prototyping can be easy and sometimes it can be hard like with most things in life. Thanks to different prototyping tools out there, they made it easier to visually design with ease, but trying to work with making it interactive can be a bit hard when it does not cooperate the way you want it to. I spent a lot of time trying to make my mockup do and look the way I want and I am satisfied with it.
Remember why I am doing it and who I am doing it for. I had to keep reminding myself that I can't just make it look the way I want it to look because it has to be MSU affiliated which means I have to keep the MSU theme along with it. That made it easier, but also hard because it limited my options. But it did make me a stronger designer and I like that.
Make as many mockups as you want. I had to tell myself that it is okay to try out different templates and see what fits the client or users. That is what is most important and making many mockups gives an advantage when denied one that is disliked. Feedback is always nice.
